This year's course focuses on the English Renaissance period, the 'golden age of English Choral music. The political and religious turmoil at the time caused composers to adapt their music to the state religion of the time. Composers of this period constantly pushed the limits and boundaries to work around strict authoritative rules. Verse anthems such as 'This is the record of John' show the intricate and growing importance of the organ in services, as well as the English cadence, which became a principal feature of this period.

We are incredibly lucky to have the privilege to sing the ancient service of Compline at San Lorenzo and Evensong at St Mark's Church this year. The repertoire will incorporate both Catholic and Protestant traditions featuring Byrd's masterpiece 'Vigilate', Purcell's 'Hear my Prayer' as well as the specific idioms to services such as Anglican Chant and the sung responses.

At FISP, as part of the course fee, all music is provided from an independent supplier. This means we use official editions which then support the fantastic work that goes into publishing these pieces and editing them. Of course, after the course, you can then keep this music.

While primarily aimed at the amateur singer comfortable with sight-reading, this does not exclude participants willing to study the music prior to the course. All materials will be sent out to attendees one month before the start of the course.
